Here you can truly get in touch with history and get the opportunity to enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the nature of this region. The monastery complex of Tatev was founded in 895-906. It is located near the village of the same name in the Syunik region of Armenia and for many centuries was the spiritual center of Syunik, as well as one of the most important centers of science and education in Armenia of the 14-15th centuries. In 1373, a university was founded in the monastery, which at that time was one of the largest in the South Caucasus. They taught theology, philosophy, grammar, mathematics, physics, astronomy, calligraphy, native language, history and architecture, literature, taught the art of miniature and wall painting, the basics of painting and book design techniques. In addition to the monks, philosophers, musicians, writers and artists lived in Tatev.
In 1931, the temple was badly damaged by the earthquake. Currently, the cultural and historical monument, which is undergoing restoration work, is open for visits and excursions.
Tatev Monastery is part of a large tourist complex, which includes the world's longest passenger cableway “Wings of Tatev”, the hermitage of Tatevi Anapat, a cave and a natural bridge called Satani Kamurj and many other attractions.
In 1995, the monastery was presented by Armenia for inclusion in the list of World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
