The word "mayraberd" is translated from Armenian as "mother-fortress". This name emphasizes how important the fort was for the defense of the city and the entire region. The fortress gives an accurate idea of how the medieval bastion was built. Huge round towers are interconnected by thick walls, inside them a complex system of paths is organized. Numerous niches for foot soldiers help to attack the enemy. The height of the fortification is 9 meters, and the length of the walls is 1.5 kilometers.
