The fortress was named Alexandrapole in honour of the wife of Nickolay I

Built during the reign of the imperator Nickolay I, the fortress was given the name in honour of the wife of Nickolay I. The fortification was made to protect from persian attacks, which was expected by Russian commanders in the 30s of the XIX century.

The bastion is also called Black fortress. Its walls were made from black basalt, that gives a unique impressiveness to the construction. The tourists are especially attracted by the enormous tower.
